Mathematics Department attain exceptional achievements across a number of national competitions run by the UK Maths Trust (UKMT)

This term we celebrate our students' success and congratulate our Mathematics Department for their exceptional achievements across a number of national competitions run by the UK Maths Trust (UKMT). In September, the Maths Competition for Girls (MCG) saw our highest achievers, Upper Sixth students Moriah and Lai Soeng, both obtain a Distinction.
In October, the prestigious Maths Olympiad for Girls (MOG) took place, with typically 5,000 entrants, involving extensive problem solving and creative thinking skills. Competitors, usually students in Years 11 to 13, tackle five challenging, in-depth problems in two and a half hours. WHSB's entrants, Lower Sixth students Chloe and Jaime, performed exceptionally well obtaining Merit awards.
Also in October, this year's Senior Mathematical Challenge saw Westcliff High School for Boys excel. A 90-minute problem-solving competition aimed at Sixth Form students, this competition tests logical reasoning and creative thinking without the use of calculators. WHSB students achieved an outstanding 17 Gold Certificates, 53 Silver and 53 Bronze reflecting their incredible effort and talent. All Gold Certificate award winners progressed through to the follow-on round, UKMT Senior Kangaroo, with top WHSB performer, Upper Sixth student Archie, securing himself a place in the next level Senior Maths Olympiad 2025.
WHSB not only competed in the Final of the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge this year but also hosted one of the many Regional Finals that took place. An exciting event full of collaboration and problem-solving, resulting in WHSB's team finishing top amongst local schools and being placed third overall in the region.
We congratulate everyone involved for enabling the School's success in these UK Maths Trust competitions on the national stage. This is a tremendous achievement and one of which our entire School community is exceptionally proud. With thanks to Director of Mathematics, Miss James, and her colleagues in the Mathematics Department for preparing the students and facilitating the School's entry to the competitions.
